Their training methods are excellent. Puppy training is pretty much the same as their Beginner level, so don't let anyone talk you into taking both.
Real puppy training should offer several play opportunities for socialization. I have worked with Ian Dunbar, in his early days. He is the founder of puppy training. Before he came along, we always waited until the dog was around six months old, which is just crazy, because now they are in the adolescent stage and a little rebellious and independent. So he really did write the book on puppy training.
Petsmart does not allow any dogs in their classes off leash. I was able to skirt this requirement by having the puppies play with their leashes still attached. They also state in their dog trainers Training Manual, that dogs are not allowed to play during sessions for reasons of liability.
I skirted that one too. If you find a trainer who has outside experience and endorses positive reinforcement over punishment or compulsion (spraying the dog with water or vinegar, rolling the dog on the back, pushing the dog into a sit or down), then you may have a really nice start in your training.
The training there is very safe and very affordable. If you don't get to have puppy play sessions in class, recruit a pet family or two or three from class to schedule play dates for your puppies. This free play is really important in socialization, especially for a dog who has been removed from the litter before the puppy was eight weeks old or older. They learn boundaries and bite inhibition from these sessions.
By the way, puppies play "let's kill each other" in their romps together. It looks vicious. And sometimes there is alarming blood, but it is usually someone losing baby teeth or a self bitten tongue.
When all dogs play, there is a natural break in the play sessions. The session of play engagement lasts no longer than ten seconds and then you will see a brief pause, when the puppies or dogs do a reality check, "We're good? We're good." making sure the session is still in non-offended play mode. If you suspect it is a fight, count off to ten. No disengagement? Then it's a squabble in earnest. This rarely results in wounds, so don't put your hands into it. You'll only amp up the tension and probably get bitten in the tangle. Damage can happen, but we forewarned, it's easy to get hurt when things turn ugly.
Also, for this reason, if you play rough with your pup, be sure to attend to the ten second rule. Dogs who are wrestled and played with physically, who are not given reassurance, find their boundaries dissolved. These end up being the dogs that jump in your face snapping or body slamming small children.
I eventually moved on from Petsmart because I believe that every dog is an individual and the training work for one may have to be altered to the dog. There was no room for this in their setting. But I did value the time with them.
