Two different chain pet stores in the same town, is there really a difference? They're both pretty decent, with similar prices and similar items.
One big bonus of Petco (over Petsmart) is that they offer rewards for shopping there. When you spend $100, you get a $5 certificate in your email -- all you have to do is sign up for a Petco loyalty card. Is this a huge discount? Well, no, but when you have to buy bones, treats, and toys on a monthly basis, it does help. I've also gotten a few coupons from them for discounts off premium food. I'm a big believer in only feeding my babies 5-star dog food (Wellness Core) and a big bag costs $35 at Petco. Not too bad considering it lasts about a month.
They have a pretty good selection of toys and clothes for dogs. Some of the toys are overpriced considering they're going to be shred to sh*t within a matter of a few days, so I usually stick to the cheap or sale toys. I've gotten some cute sweaters and jackets here for my fashionable diva, Britney. Petsmart however wins on clothes because they have the Martha Stewart dog line, which is adorbs.
Only reason for not a higher rating is because of their grooming salon. The first time I brought my dog Owen was right when we first adopted him and all he needed was a bath. They said he was fine. The 2nd time I brought him in, they said he was horrible and wouldn't sit still and basically told me to never bring him back. I told her that I was very sorry and I had just adopted him and had no idea on his temperament. The groomer acted like I was lying about it. We did find out later that he was the stud of a puppy mill and probably hadn't gotten much grooming throughout his life (and we now bring him to the animal hospital to get groomed.) I do think that the groomer could have been nicer and handled the situation a little bit better. On the other hand, my other dog Britney is an angel and would let anyone do anything to her. Petco has always done a good job with her and never had any complaints.
Another thing that bothers me is that Petco (and Petsmart) refused to pull the chicken jerky from their shelves in the past when all of it was being recalled. They were one of the last places to issue the recall. (They did finally issue the recall.) Maybe I am an overprotective pet parent, but I don't buy treats or bones from Petco or Petsmart any longer. I only buy the ones that are from a local dog boutique that hand makes the treats.
