Why use a crate?
- A crate is a safe, secure area for your dog to be when you cant give him your full attention or going out for a short time
- It can help speed up house training
- It is somewhere for your dog to go when he needs time out
- It is a secure den for your dog to retreat to and relax without being disturbed. (Ensure children and other pets leave dog alone when he is in the crate)
- It is the perfect way to protect your house from damage due to inappropriate chewing
- A safe secure way to transport your dog
- Acclimatises your dog to a crate for visits to vet or groomer.
- Ideal to use for those breaks away. It is familiar to your dog and the holiday home is safe from your dog making a mess or chewing!
How big should the crate be and where should it be situated?
- The crate should be big enough for your dog to fit in comfortably. He should have room to stand up, stretch out and space for his water bowl.
- You need to place it in a convenient but quieter part of the house so dog can still see and hear what is going on but is able to relax.
- A good idea is to have it reasonably near an exit to the garden for quick access to save any accidents.
Introducing the crate
- The crate needs to be as comfortable and inviting as possible for your dog to build up positive associations with it. Put a piece of vet bed in the bottom of crate. Any moisture will pass through the vet bed and the top will stay dry. Always have fresh water available. Place a couple of safe toys in the crate i.e. a stuffed Kong is useful.
- Initially leave the crate door open so the dog is free to come and go. Use tasty food treats to encourage him in, starting at the door and gradually moving them further back once he is happy entering. You can introduce a word such as kennel or bed at this stage so that he can begin to associate the word with the action.
- Do not rush this stage. If your dog is not happy to go into the crate do not force him this will set up bad associations. Take your time in showing him that it is a safe and fun place.
- Repeat this several times throughout the day. Feed him his meals in the crate. While he is eating try closing the door for a few minutes. Try closing the door when your dog is sleeping. The door should only be shut for short periods of time.
- If your dog whines or barks while he is in the crate, ignore him and only go back to him when he is quiet. If you let him out while he is barking, he will learn to bark to get out!
- Remember to take your dog out to toilet before you put him in his crate.
- If your dog cries during the night just calmly take him out to toilet and put him back without making a fuss or over exciting him.
- The crate should never be used as a punishment but can be used for time out if he has become over excited. The crate can also be used at human meal times along with the stuffed Kong.
